The GSMA organisers of the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona reported that the number of attendees were slightly down from 55,000 in 2008 to 47,000 this year from 189 countries.
In addition to the conference for senior level executives
of the mobile, software, internet and new media industries there was also an exhibition featuring 1300 exhibiting companies spread over 8 exhibition halls.
These attendance numbers underline the confidence that the mobile operators and their software and equipment suppliers have in the growth potential of the mobile industry and its extension into mobile internet. It estimated that there are now more than 3.5 Billion mobile phone users and that the major growth in the internet in the future will be driven by these users upgrading to smartphones including the Blackberry, Microsoft Mobile devices, Google Android and the latest Palm Pre handheld. The increasing availability and affordability of these advanced phones is driving a flurry of software activity to develop a wide range of new applications to enable the mobile operators to create a competitive edge.
The major casualty missing from the exhibition was Nortel who are now in administration. Their place was filled by a much larger presence of the Chinese manufacturers, Huawei and ZTE. Indeed we were reminded that the centre of gravity of the mobile telecoms market is shifting east to the major population centres of China and India with China Telecom now eclipsing Vodafone as the leading mobile operator. There was also a strong showing from Samsung, LG and HTC showcasing their latest handsets and a number of major Indian outsourcing providers.
The feedback I received from the exhibitors was that mobile operators purchasing decisions are now being driven by a need to cut costs and deploy new Value Added Services (VAS) that can establish a clear marketing advantage over their increasingly aggressive competitors. Any investments have to show a rapid Return on Investment and there is an increasing trend towards risk sharing and “pay as you grow” business models.

The major winners appear to be the software companies offering highly scalable VAS applications , mobile internet advertising platforms and the supporting control and real time charging applications aiming to squeeze the maximum revenues out of the new services.
